The Role of Social Media in Recruitment and Selection in the IT Sector: Opportunities, Risks, and Responsible Practices
Social media has become an important component of recruitment and selection, especially in the information technology (IT) sector, where organizations compete for digitally skilled and geographically dispersed talent. This paper examines how platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, and related professional networks influence talent sourcing, employer branding, candidate engagement, screening, and selection decisions. Drawing on a structured text-based review of documents related to social media recruitment, the study uses topic modelling, trend analysis, and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) to identify dominant themes in the literature and practice discussion. The analysis indicates that social media can improve recruitment reach, reduce information gaps between recruiters and applicants, strengthen access to passive candidates, and support more responsive employer branding. At the same time, the findings highlight persistent risks connected with privacy, data misuse, subjective interpretation of online profiles, algorithmic bias, and unequal access to digital platforms. The paper argues that social media recruitment is most effective when it is treated as a strategic and ethically governed supplement to traditional recruitment methods rather than as a stand-alone replacement. The study concludes by proposing responsible practices for IT organizations, including transparent data-use policies, structured assessment criteria, recruiter training, privacy safeguards, periodic fairness audits, and blended recruitment channels that protect inclusivity while preserving efficiency.
